Tokyo is on its way to becoming a smart energy city, with plans to cut carbon emissions 30% by 2030, compared to 2000 levels.

To get there, the city is rallying support from both its citizens and businesses, and targeting its biggest emitter – buildings. Through visionary incentives, it’s boosting the energy efficiency of all types of buildings – residential, commercial, new and old. Tokyo has implemented the world's First Mandatory CO2 Emissions Reduction and Trading Scheme: Tokyo Cap-and-Trade, targeting its biggest emitter – buildings. Policies have also been passed requiring businesses to self-report their emissions and develop action plans to reduce them, as well as to participate in a cap-and-trade system.

WHY WE LOVE CITIES

Over half the world’s population now live in cities, and they generate over 70% of our climate footprint. But cities also offer an immense opportunity to create better places to live while contributing to a healthier planet in the process. Through better transport, green buildings, harnessing the power of nature, wasting less and loving more, cities can lead the way to a climate-friendly future.
